AMS is a special experimental ISS module, which aims to accurately measure the flux of charged cosmic rays at low terrestrial orbit. With it, it is possible to study the formation of the universe, the search for evidence of the existence of strange particles, dark matter and antimatter. The unit was installed on the ISS 19 May 2011.
The researchers believe that the main component of dark matter is WIMP (weakly interacting massive particles). Although AMS is unable to detect them directly, by measuring the physical values used to describe them, their detection becomes possible thanks to that space spectrometer which can contribute to one of the greatest discoveries in the history of astrophysics.
- We waited for it 18 years and now make the last calculation. I hope that in the next 2-3 weeks we will release a statement – said Sam Ting of MIT.
What is the announced revolution? Is the mystery of dark matter will be finally resolved?
Researchers remains silent, but the next few weeks may prove to be crucial for astrophysics.
